Side effects of Eliquis blood thinner and alcohol

Described Eliquis

Eliquis (apixaban) is a brand-name oral tablet that’s prescribed for treating or preventing blood clots in a certain irregular heartbeat(atrial fibrillation) or after hip/knee replacement surgery. Eliquis has interactions with some other drugs and certain supplements. Examples include nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), certain antidepressants, and grapefruit. Eliquis (apixaban) With atrial fibrillation part of the heart does not beat the way it should. This can lead to blood clots forming, which can travel to other parts of your body(such as the lungs or legs) or increase your risk for stroke

Uses of Eliquis

Read the medication guide, if available, and the patient information leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking apixaban, and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor and pharmacist. Take this medication with or without food as directed by your doctor usually twice daily (every 12 hours). If you cannot swallow the tablet whole you may crush the tablet and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce. The dosage is based on your medical condition, age, weight, kidney function response to treatment, and other medication you may be taking.

             Side effects of Eliquis

When you stop Eliquis medication without consulting your doctor, some conditions may become worse. Sometimes, a factor or condition could prevent your doctor from prescribing Eliquis due to the risk of harm. This is known as a contraindication. Eliquis side effects include blood in the urine, fatigue, and headache. The contraindications of Elliquis include:

If you have active bleeding

If you have had an allergic reaction to Eliquis or any of its ingredient

Common side effects include:

Bleeding from the nose or gums

Dizziness

Nausea

Bruising easily

Rash

Tiredness or lack of energy

The kinds of bleeding include:

Heavier periods last longer than usual. If you give your cuts then bleeding starts. This type of bleeding is not dangerous If you have this type of bleeding you can stop this by pressurizing the places for 10 minutes where the bleeding is. If you have nose bleeding sit or stand do not lie down place an icepack(or bag of frozen peas wrapped in a tea towel. If you have an allergic reaction after using Eliquis talk to your doctor and tell them. What should you do to stop bleeding and not play any type of game like football, cricket, and horse riding so that you will get injured

Serious side effects

Severe allergic reactions to Elliquis cause itching, chest pain, hives, swelling of the face or tongue, and labored breathing. Consider these reactions a medical emergency. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should call their doctor 911 immediately.

Red, pink, or brown urine

Joint pain, or swelling

Red or black, tarry stools

Heavy vaginal bleeding

Severe or uncontrollable bleeding from an injury

Coughing up or vomiting  blood or material that looks like coffee grounds

Chest pain or tightness

Wheezing or difficulty breathing

Blood in the brain

Eliquis and alcohols

There’s no interaction between Eliquis and alcohol. However, both alcohol and Eliquis can increase your bleeding. (The two substances may prevent blood clotting). This means that drinking alcohol while taking Eliquis could increase your risk of bleeding further. If you consume alcohol, talk with your doctor. They can advise you on whether there’s a safe amount to drink while taking Eliquis. Before you start treatment with Eliquis, tell your doctor and pharmacist which prescription, over-the-counter, and other medications you take. By sharing this information, you may help prevent possible interaction

Blood clots with early discontinuation

According to the black box warning on Eliquis’s packaging, people who suddenly stop taking the drug are at a higher risk of developing drug clots. Blood clots seal off damaged blood vessels to stop bleeding, but blood clots that form within the bloodstream can be dangerous. These clots can cause heart attacks, stroke, and tissue death. Eliquis’s April 2021 label update added a warning about increased rates of stroke among people transitioning from Eliquis to warfarin. Discuss with your doctor if you’re considering switching blood thinners.

 Preventing interaction

You can take certain steps to help prevent interactions with Eliquis. For example, you should plan the following:

Tell them about any other medications and supplements you take

Let them know if you drink alcohol or take cannabis

Create a medication list, which your doctor and pharmacist can help you fill out.

It’s also important to read the label of Eliquis and other paperwork that comes with the drug. The title may have colored stickers that mention an interaction and the paperwork sometimes called the prescribing information may contain details about interactions.

Overdose

If someone has overdosed and has serious symptoms such as passing out or trouble breathing call a poison control central right away. US residents can call their local poison control center at 1-800-222-1222. Canada residents can call a provincial poison control center. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Take your next dose at the regular time. Do not double the dose to catch up.

Storage

Store at room temperature away from light and moisture. Do not store it in the bathroom. Suppose you are crushing the tablet and mixing it as directed in water. Keep all medication away from children. Do not flush medications down the toilets or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so.

Advise

Before taking Eliquis(apixaban) if you feel any symptoms of this immediately tell your doctor about these symptoms. This product may contain inactive ingredients talk to your pharmacist, especially about liver disease or kidney disease.
